Prof. Rufai Yusuf Ahmad
Prof. Rufai Yusuf Ahmad is the current Registrar / CEO of the Medical Rehabilitation Therapists (Registration) Board of Nigeria (MRTB), having been appointed to the role in August 2023.
Academic Background
Prof. Ahmad graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physiotherapy from Bayero University, Kano, Nigeria in 2001. He obtained both his Master of Science (2008) and PhD (2012) in Health and Rehabilitation from the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom, and subsequently earned a Doctor of Physiotherapy degree from the University of Michigan‑Flint, Michigan, USA in 2015.
Professional Experience
Prior to his appointment to the MRTB, Prof. Ahmad served as Associate Professor and Deputy Director (Procurement and Training), Directorate of Laboratory Management, at Bayero University, Kano. He concurrently held the role of Honorary Consultant Physiotherapist at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano.
Within Bayero University, he progressed through senior academic leadership positions including Head of the Department of Physiotherapy, Deputy Dean, and later Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences.
He was also the founding Editor‑in‑Chief of the Bayero Journal of Evidence‑Based Physiotherapy, contributing to the growth of peer‑reviewed rehabilitation scholarship in Nigeria.
Leadership & Governance
Prof. Ahmad is a Past National President of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy (NSP), the country's principal professional body for the physiotherapy profession.
He previously served as a Board Member of the MRTB before his appointment as Registrar / CEO — giving him a rare combination of governance experience and operational stewardship of the regulator.
